Using geophysical conductivity and resistivity surveys, Mundell successfully delineated down-gradient groundwater impacts both vertically and laterally at a former salt storage area. Sampling will provide information on attenuation of chloride concentrations over time and also with distance from the source area. The detailed and accurate delineation will inform the selection of a remedial strategy and allow decision makers to estimate a future date that the former public supply wells may be brought back into production……Read More »

Geophysical Mapping of Karst Terrane at a Municipal Airport
After a combination of field observations, geologic knowledge, and geophysical measurements, a soil boring was drilled at the site of a proposed runway extension and an extensive void was observed with the downhole camera. As a result of Mundell’s Geophysical Services, the runway design was improved to account for the bedrock features……Read More »
Fuel Oil Delineation and Site Closure at a Steam Generation Plant
In 2006, Mundell was retained to provide consulting services at a Ball State University steam generation facility that had been the subject of environmental investigative activities since 1993 when it was discovered that that fuel oil had been released from an on-site underground storage tank. After historical review and site investigations, Mundell determined that: (1) groundwater impacts were limited in effect and distribution; (2) the vapor exposure pathway was incomplete, and; (3) SPH materials were effectively immobilized within a geologic formation beneath the site. Mundell then proposed a risk-based approach to achieve site closure without further monitoring or remediation, including the placement of an Environmental Restrictive Covenant (ERC) on the property that defined a specific zone of soil impacts, restricted uncontrolled groundwater use, and limited future usage of the property to non-residential purposes……Read More »
Variation in Hydraulic Conductivity and Retardation Factor and its Effect on Numerical and Analytical Model Results
Soil and groundwater contaminated with Perchloroethene (PCE) was discovered at the a dry cleaner site in Columbus, Indiana during a Phase I Investigation. In an effort to bring the remedial efforts to an effective closure, Mundell was retained by a partnering consulting firm to evaluate the stability of the dissolved organic plume using groundwater flow and chemical transport modeling……Read More »
Comprehensive Operation and Maintenance Program
In an effort to reduce groundwater treatment system costs, Mundell decided to turn over the operation and maintenance (O&M) of one of its remediation systems to a sub-contractor located much closer to the system than Mundell. Mundell developed and then trained the sub-contractor using the step by step written guidelines for all routine maintenance procedures, site visit procedures, and sampling procedures. These procedures allow Mundell to retain responsible oversight of the system O&M with minimal time invested……Read More »
