The Use of Geophysical Surveys for Enhanced Environmental Characterization in Karst Terranes

July 10, 2020 Topic: Science and Environment

This month John Mundell and Ryan Brumbaugh of Mundell & Associates published a unique case history in the latest edition of FastTIMES, a news magazine published electronically by the Environmental and Engineering Geophysical Society with a distribution of over 10,000 readers.

The case history details geophysical work at a site in Kentucky which had been impacted with petroleum hydrocarbons from an UST release. Mundell & Associates used a variety of geophysical techniques including terrain conductivity, GPR, 2-D ERI, and downhole geophysical logging to assist the
environmental consultants and Kentucky Department of Environmental Protection in gaining an enhanced understanding of the bedrock surface in order to design a corrective action plan and to provide insight into the geology, hydrogeology, distribution of preferential transport pathways, and any notable subsurface anomalies that might be indicative of potential contaminant mass or any remaining UST and product piping systems.

Check Your Heating Ducts

To ensure that as much warm air as possible is delivered through your central system, check the ductwork and wrap any leaks with duct mastic. Distribution losses (what’s lost while air is transported from your furnace through ductwork to the vents) often amounts to 30%. So, sealing ductwork could increase efficiency and the warm air you receive considerably … keeping you warmer and making your furnace work less.
