Over the past 6 years, Mundell & Associates, in collaboration with Edison Wetlands and If It Was Your Child, has been involved in environmental investigation efforts in Franklin, IN, near the Amphenol/Franklin Power Products site where known environmental contaminants were handled and disposed from 1961 to 1983.
In April of 2024, the EPA approved the site’s final remedial implementation plan which aims to cleanup residual volatile organic compounds, or VOCs, in area soil and groundwater. Earlier work by Mundell had confirmed that the indoor air quality of nearby homes continued to be at risk nearly 40 years after original investigations at the site began. During the investigation over 1,000 feet of sewer lines and surrounding soil along nearby Forsythe Street were removed.
The final cleanup plan includes installation of permeable reactive barriers (PRBs), underground “walls” that can be created to treat groundwater. PRBs are usually built by filling a trench with reactive material that essentially treats the groundwater as it flows in and allows the cleaned water out area beyond the barrier. Additionally, long term monitoring will be established by the EPA to ensure final clean-up is proceeding as expected.
