Laura Barnhart: Staff Environmental Scientist

Laura Barnhart, Staff Environmental Scientist joined the Mundell team in March 2014. Staff reporter Krissy Vargo catches up with Laura in between trips out in the field.

Where are you from?
London, Ohio

How many years have you been in this career?
I am new to the consulting world, but have gained perspective in environmental science and policy in other roles since 2009.

How did you hear about Mundell?
I met current colleague at a networking event for environmental professionals in Indianapolis, but also knew of the company through case studies in my Groundwater Modeling course in graduate school.

What are some skills and/or experiences are you hoping to gain here at Mundell?
Hoping to hone my AutoCAD skills, better understand options and timelines for environmental investigations and remedial activities, and gain experience in project management.

What is your favorite thing about the field you are in?
Much of our work has a direct impact on the health and wealth of the stakeholders; it keeps me ever mindful of our reliance on natural resources.

Have you always wanted to do what you are doing now?
It has taken me a few positions to settle on a best fit for me, but I always knew that I would be in the environmental field general and specifically a in a role that would get me out in the field frequently.

What is a favorite hobby you have?
Running! It is efficient exercise for a busy person and can serves as either social or alone time for me. Hope to train for another marathon in the next year or so.

Consider Worm Composting for Small Spaces

Getting that garden ready? Set up a home for some small, red tiger worms, which you can buy. Be sure to use a wooden box with holes and a lid for a worm compost bin. Add a layer of moist, shredded newspaper and soil for their bedding, and then feed them once a week with vegetable peelings wrapped in newspaper or paper towels. Every two or three months, the rich, fine compost will be ready to use.
