Earth Science Week 2016 – Our Shared Geohertitage

October 5, 2016 Topic: Community Involvement, Science and Environment

For the past 17 years, the American Geosciences Institute has promoted and organized this national and international event to to help the public gain a better understanding and appreciation for the Earth Sciences and to encourage stewardship of the Earth.

This year’s theme is “Our Shared Geoheritage”. Geoheritage is the collection of natural wonders, landforms, and resources that have formed over eons and come to this generation to manage, use, and conserve effectively. Geoheritage locations are valued for many reasons, including scientific, economic, ecological, educational, cultural, aesthetic, artistic, and recreational purposes. Celebrate Biodiversity

Approximately 33% of the food consumed by humans is dependent, either directly or indirectly, on honey bee pollination. Here are a few steps you can take to help these important pollinators!

  • Keep beekeeping in your area viable by buying local honey.
  • Grow a variety of flowering plants in your garden and avoid using pesticides.
  • Learn the difference between honeybees and other flying insects such as wasps/yellow jackets to prevent the inadvertent use of deadly sprays.
