For the past 17 years, the American Geosciences Institute has promoted and organized this national and international event to to help the public gain a better understanding and appreciation for the Earth Sciences and to encourage stewardship of the Earth.
This year’s theme is “Our Shared Geoheritage”. Geoheritage is the collection of natural wonders, landforms, and resources that have formed over eons and come to this generation to manage, use, and conserve effectively. Geoheritage locations are valued for many reasons, including scientific, economic, ecological, educational, cultural, aesthetic, artistic, and recreational purposes. Sunday October 9 – EarthCache Day
Did you know? The Indiana Historical Society has over 1,700 catalogued maps of Indiana.
Today: We couldn’t come out today, but join us at Mundell & Associates on Thursday, October 13 for IrvingtonCache. You’ll combine the fun of a treasure hunt, the technology of GPS, and the beauty of our earth with this fun activity! EarthCaching is similar to the popular Geocaching but instead visitors find new knowledge or insights each location.

Monday, October 10 – Earth Science Literacy Day

Tuesday, October 11 – Earth Observation Day
Did you know? The Landsat program has provided a continuous space-based record of the surface of the Earth since 1972, allowing us to see how the Earth’s land surface has changed.
Today: Take a drinking straw, paper towel roll and rolled up posterboard outside to learn about viewing the world through different perspectives. (Full activity)

Wednesday, October 12 – National Fossil Day
Did you know? When glaciers arrived in Indiana, they eroded entire layers of bedrock including those that would have contained dinosaur fossils.
