What is Geocaching?
Geocaching is like a treasure hunt in which you use advanced mapping skills and Global Positioning Systems’ support to locate the positions of special ‘targets’. Geologists use this technology in their daily work to develop maps for engineering and environmental projects as well as to display geologic and environmental data.
How do I get the locations (coordinates)?
We’ll provide the first location (coordinates) here on the website (see above), beginning at 3 pm (and at our south building entrance). When the first target is found, it will provide some very interesting facts about Indiana Geology and Environmental science, and will also have the coordinates for the next target. Find all 5 targets (which should take about 1 hour by foot), and then you will be given the final coordinates of the “Geologic Treasure Trove” to collect your prizes! Special prizes will be awarded to any earth and environmental science teachers who send their students.
What do I need?
Download a GPS app your cell phones or tablet. Wear comfortable walking shoes (all coordinates will be found by foot).

Are there prizes?
Yes! Find all 5 targets and then you will be given the final coordinates of the “Geologic Treasure Trove” to collect your prizes. Special prizes will be awarded to any earth and environmental science teachers who bring or send students.
