What is better than “PI” day?….”PIE” day!

October 3, 2016 Topic: Community Involvement

While we scientists, mathematicians, and engineers love celebrating “PI” day every year on March 14, we have a new favorite “PIE” event! It is the Partners In the Environment day at Cold Spring Environmental Studies Magnet School.

On Friday, our interns and employees (Liz, Paulo, Santi, Marco, and Haley) went to Cold Spring School, an IPS magnet school, to participate in their Partners in the Environment (PIE) Day. During PIE days, students rotate through learning stations staffed by volunteers from various organizations. Mundell presented on the hydrological cycle and we played a game in which students got to move through the hydrological cycle to about what happens to water on earth. About 100 students participated throughout the day.

Everyone enjoyed the homemade apple cider, kettle corn and the beautiful fall weather!

Reduce Your Exposure to Lead

Although the US no longer adds lead to gasoline, many homes are still at risk for lead exposure. If your home was built before 1978, it may contain lead-based paint or water pipes with lead solder. In addition to contacting a qualified contractor to test for lead, here are some things everyone can do:

  • Don’t use glazed pottery to cook, serve, or store food (unless you know its lead-free)
  • Keep cosmetics out of children’s mouth
  • Replace old vinyl mini blinds
  • Don’t store liquid in lead crystal containers
