For the past several years, Project Geologist Rachel Walker of Mundell and Associates has instructed the “Indiana Geology” class to a group of Hoosiers completing the Indiana Master Naturalist Program at Fort Benjamin Harrison.
This year, Rachel used a creative and delicious tool to demonstrate underground layers – a geology cake! Class members participated by “drilling” holes using clear straws to try and construct a cross section of the internal cake ‘geology’. Additionally, Rachel explained how faults can move in different ways with one of the cakes cut open.
The Indiana Master Naturalist Program is open to any adult with a genuine love for nature, but who may have limited formal science/natural resources training. The courses to expand their knowledge of different topics, including plants, wildlife, soils and other natural resources in Indiana.
